One app, one setting in Discord and five minutes. This guide walks through each step on Windows and Mac, the Discord settings that ruin the sound, and the honest answer for phones.

    What you need

    • A computer. Windows or Mac. Live voice changing doesn't work in Discord's phone apps; more on that below.
    • A desktop voice changer with a virtual microphone, such as MagicMic, Voicemod, Voice.ai or Dubbing AI. A website can't do it: it can't act as your microphone in Discord.
    • Headphones. Without them the changed voice leaks from your speakers back into the mic and echoes.

    Not sure which app to pick? Our comparison of the best voice changer for Discord covers free and AI options.

    Step 1: install the voice changer

    Download the app from its official site and install it. During setup it adds a virtual audio device to your computer: a microphone that plays your changed voice. If Discord was open, quit it fully and start it again so it sees the new microphone.

    Step 2: connect your real microphone to the app

    Open the voice changer and set its input to your real microphone: your headset or USB mic. Pick a voice and say a few words with the "hear myself" option on, so you know it works. Turn that option off before you join a call, or you will hear yourself twice.

    Step 3: choose the virtual microphone in Discord

    1. Open User Settings

      Click the gear icon next to your name at the bottom left.

    2. Go to Voice & Video

      It is under App Settings in the left menu.

    3. Change Input Device

      Pick the voice changer's virtual microphone. It is usually named after the app.

    4. Check Input Mode

      Voice Activity works for most people; Push to Talk is better if you are often near noise.

    Step 4: switch off Discord's voice processing

    This is the step most guides skip, and the main reason a voice changer sounds robotic on Discord. Discord's filters try to clean up your voice and treat the changed one as noise. In Voice & Video, under Voice Processing:

    • set Noise Suppression to None;
    • turn off Echo Cancellation;
    • turn off Automatic Gain Control.

    Most voice changers have their own noise filter. Use that one instead.

    Step 5: test your voice

    In Voice & Video, find Mic Test and press Let's Check. Talk for a few seconds: you should hear the changed voice, not your own. Then join a voice channel with a friend and ask how it sounds, because what you hear in your headphones is not always what others hear.

    How to use an AI voice changer on Discord

    The steps are the same for AI voice changers such as MagicMic, Voice.ai or Dubbing AI: install, pick the virtual mic, switch off Discord's processing. AI voices just need more from your computer, so a few extra tips help:

    • close games or browser tabs you don't need while you talk;
    • if the app has a low-latency or performance mode, turn it on for calls;
    • speak at your normal speed and volume: the AI copies your rhythm, so mumbling comes out as mumbling.

    Voice changer on Discord mobile

    On iPhone and Android you can't change your voice live in a Discord call. Phones don't let one app replace the microphone of another, so Discord always hears your real voice. You can still record a clip with a voice changer app and send it in the chat as a file, or type and let a bot read for you, as shown in our guide to Discord text to speech.

    FAQ

    Can I use a voice changer on Discord without downloading anything?

    Not for live calls. Only an installed app can add a virtual microphone. Websites can change a recording that you then send as a file.

    Does it work on a Mac?

    Yes. MagicMic and Voicemod both have macOS versions, and the Discord steps are the same.

    Does it work in Discord in the browser?

    Usually yes. Choose the virtual microphone when the browser asks for microphone access, or in Discord's Voice & Video settings.

    Will my friends know I'm using a voice changer?

    With simple effects, yes. AI voices are much harder to spot if you talk naturally and your microphone is decent.

    How do I switch back to my normal voice?

    Turn the voice changer off, or set Input Device in Discord back to your real microphone.
