Two kinds of text to speech on Discord
| Feature | The /tts command | A TTS bot |
|---|---|---|
| Where it speaks | In a text channel | In a voice channel |
| Who hears it | People viewing the channel with TTS on | Everyone in the voice channel |
| Whose voice | Each listener's own device voice | The voice you pick in the bot |
| Setup | Built in | Invite a bot to the server |
In short: /tts is for a quick message read aloud in chat. A text to speech bot is for people who can't or don't want to talk in voice chat but still want to be heard.
How to turn on text to speech in Discord
Open User Settings
Click the gear icon next to your name.
Go to Accessibility
Find the Text-to-Speech section.
Allow playback
Turn on "Allow playback and usage of /tts command" and set the speech rate you like.
Want Discord to read every new message, not just /tts ones? In Notifications, set Text-to-Speech Notifications to the current channel or to all channels. It gets noisy fast, so most people keep it off.
How to send a TTS message
Type /tts, pick the command, write your message and press Enter. Discord reads it aloud to everyone who is viewing that channel with text to speech turned on. You need the "Send Text-to-Speech Messages" permission in the server, and server admins can switch it off.
Why Discord text to speech isn't working
- Playback is off in Accessibility, on your side or the listener's.
- The server doesn't give your role the "Send Text-to-Speech Messages" permission.
- The listener isn't viewing that channel at the moment the message arrives.
- The listener is on a phone. TTS messages are read aloud in the desktop app and the browser.
- Your system volume is down or the computer has no speech voice installed.
Discord text to speech bot for voice channels
A text to speech bot on Discord joins your voice channel and reads messages from a text channel you link it to, so everyone in the call hears them in the same voice, phones included. You will find many of them in bot directories such as top.gg. When you compare them, check four things:
- Voices: how many female voices and languages it has, and whether you can pick one per user;
- Limits: how many characters the free version reads per day or month;
- Permissions: it needs to read messages in the linked channel, and nothing more;
- Activity: a recent update and an active support server mean it will keep working.
How to add a text to speech bot on Discord
Open the invite link
Use the link on the bot's official site or its directory page. You need the Manage Server permission.
Pick your server and approve
Check the permissions it asks for: connect, speak and read messages in the linked channel.
Join a voice channel and set it up
Run the bot's setup or join command and choose the text channel it should read.
Choose a voice
Most bots have a voice command; check its help command for the exact name.
Make Discord read in a girl voice
The /tts command can't do it: each listener hears their own device voice. You have three options:
- A TTS bot with female voices. Pick one in the bot's voice settings. Quick and free, but the voices are basic.
- Pre-made clips. Make lines with an AI girl voice generator, then play them in the call through Discord's soundboard or a voice changer's soundboard. Natural voice, but only for lines you prepare.
- A live voice changer. Talk and be heard in a girl voice. Our guide on how to use a voice changer on Discord shows the setup.

FAQ
Can I change the /tts voice on Discord?
Only for yourself. /tts uses each listener's device voice, so changing the voice in your system settings changes what you hear, not what others hear.
Does Discord text to speech work on mobile?
TTS messages are read aloud in the desktop app and the browser. A TTS bot in a voice channel is heard by everyone, phones included.
How do I stop Discord from reading messages?
Turn off "Allow playback and usage of /tts command" in Accessibility, and set Text-to-Speech Notifications to Never. To silence a bot, mute it in the voice channel.
Is a text to speech Discord bot free?
Most have a free version with a daily or monthly character limit and charge for more voices or longer messages.
Why can't I use /tts in a server?
The server hasn't given your role the "Send Text-to-Speech Messages" permission. Ask a moderator.
